History of Statues
Primitive tribal figures and statues have dated back to the pre-recorded times of Indonesia as well as most Asian countries. Before the coming of Buddhism or Hinduism animalistic
beliefs ruled throughout the Indonesian Archipelago. Animals, which were the islanders main diet, had been worshipped in the form of a statue or figurine and were respected in the
laying down of offerings in their honor. Ancestral statues and figurines, which still exist today, date back to B.C. Many primitive and tribal statues or figurines were
considered to hold magical or spiritual powers, while some were even feared. Many of these beliefs and worshipping of idols or statues still remain to the present day. Many
ceremonial figurines and statues represented gods and demons and modern day replicas of these are still seen in parades and ceremonies in many regions.
Balinese Statues
In the Balinese Hindu culture and religion, statues and figurines are used to represent their gods and demons. Throughout Asia many statues and figurines represent good luck, good
health or prosperity and are found in most homes or places of business. Throughout Asia these statues and figurines are used for religious and ceremonial purposes much the same as
totems are used in other cultures.
